This summer, I felt like I improved in doing my homework and not getting lazy about it. My goal for the year to come to school everyday and be on time.

In this blog, we are supposed to pick a country and talk about their history development in math. China was the country who proved that the Pythagorean theorem or the right-angle triangle theory was true. The theory stated that if you add the squares of the legs of the right angle, it is equal to the squares of the hypotenuse (the longest leg). A mathematician name Chou Pei proved it using the picture on the left known as chi-chu. It means the piliing up of squares. China used it as a way to solve algebraic equations using geometry. The picture on the right is a diagram by Zhou Bi. There are four 3 by 4 rectangles around a 1 by 1 square. The four triangles make a tilted square. This was also used to solve the pythagorean theorem.

Vicky`s Centroid Triangle

On Friday, me and Silverio made a triangle. We started drawing it on patty paper and bisected each angle. Then we marked the midpoint and vertex onto the cardboard and re-drew the triangle. We labeled the center where all three lines intersect the centroid or center of gravity. Then we tried to balance the cardboard triangle on a pencil. That is called the median. You measure the length and make a proportion. It becomes the shorter line / the longer line.

Vicky`s Fibonacci

Fibonacci numbers are a sequence where the number 1 is the first two terms. N is the number of the term and F(n) is the value of that term. The most appealing rectangle to the ancient Greeks was the one with the proportion of width/length equal to length/ length+width. You solve for x by cross multiplying, and using the quadratic formula. Approximate the answer to 3 decimal places and that number is called the Golden Ratio.

Vicky`s Numb3rs Activity 1

In the movie, Numb3rs, Charlie was used to help find the murderer. He said that the murderer is choosing different victims and is trying not to make a pattern so that the murderer won`t get caught. But even though the murderer tries to do that, it doesn`t work. Charlie helped prove it by telling the FBIs to arrange themselves randomly. He came up with an equation using trigonometry to find out where the murderer lives, but soon found out that they couldn`t find him there. So he created two hot spot and looked up people from both locations. They narrowed it down to 8 people and caught the murderer for his past reputation.

This is a picture of the 8 pointed star that I learned how to make during my first week in summer school.

Vicky`s Tetrahedron

I made this tetrahedron with my group. We used yarn and straws to create it. We also used toothpicks and needles to help push the yarn through the straws. When we`re finished, we created an equiangular triangle ; the tetrahedron.

Vicky`s Airplane

This is a picture of a paper airplane that I made on July 6th. I didnt win any of the contest that day, but next time, I`m going to try to win most fancyest.

Vicky`s Objects

This is a picture of a basketball court. It is a reflectional symmetry. One side looks exactly thee same as thee other.


This is a picture of a rotational tire. No matter how many times you rotate it, it will still look the same. It is a five fold symmetry.
